Wrap yourself in the warmth of our recently finished, one-of-a-kind timber frame straw bale home - aka DD's House. Owner-built in honor of our beloved Grandma DD, we welcome you and yours to enjoy some trailside quality time together as you relax after a day of skiing, hiking, mountain biking, or simply enjoying the beauty of Stowe, Vermont.
Located right next to Stowe's Cady Hill Forest, this thoughtful design will present you with truly unique construction and finish details.
DD's house was designed by a local architect to utilize nearby materials as much as possible. The timbers were sourced from a forest roughly 30 miles away, and the straw bales, which are used for insulation, come from Shelburne, VT - roughly one hour from Stowe.
It blends centuries-old construction methods with a modern, energy efficient design to create a truly unique and inviting living space. The first level open-layout contains the living room and kitchen, with the bedroom and bathroom also on the ground level.
The bedroom has a queen-size bed with storage underneath, dimmable sconce lights, and blackout curtains. The bathroom's walk-in shower has been finished with tadelakt plaster - a Moroccan finishing method used on lime plaster to create a waterproof surface. The shower features a large rain shower head and hand wand.
The custom sliding front windows allow for ample natural lighting, but should you desire more privacy, simply draw the sheers or blackout curtains shut as you enjoy a well-earned beverage in front of the pellet stove. Here you can choose to relax in the handmade woven rocking chair, leather recliner, or on the couch.
And since you're only 300 yards from Cady Hill Forest trailhead, you might even consider a late-night forest adventure under the moonlight before hitting the sheets. (You can also get to town via Charlie's Trail from DD's House - no need to get in your car!)
The kitchen is fully outfitted with an electric range, cooking utensils, pots, pans, etc... There is a dishwasher and a retro-style Smeg refrigerator and freezer to make food storage and clean-up easy. A combo washer/dryer unit is located in the cabinet to the left of the oven in case you need to do a quick load of laundry (yes, one machine to wash and dry - it's like voodoo magic!).
The ship ladder leads to a lofted space with a futon, which also has clothing storage under it.
You'll have the entire home to yourself, and we've outfitted it with just about everything you might need. We live in our home on the same piece of land, so if there is anything missing, just give us a shout and we'll make it right.
You'll have access to all of DD's house, as well as the front and backyard. The spruce trees between DD's house and our red garage more or less define the "boundary" of DD's yard. We'll send a code for the lockbox after you book so you can access the keys to the house.
DD's house was built with love. We hope you care for and appreciate it as much as we do.
